The Washington Post today introduces us this morning to a controversy over Afghanistan war strategy. The Post reports that operations in Delaram (in the southwest) are "far from a strategic priority for senior officers at the international military headquarters in Kabul. One calls Delaram, a day's drive from the nearest city, 'the end of the Earth.' Another deems the area 'unrelated to our core mission' of defeating the Taliban by protecting Afghans in their cities and towns."

KABUL (AP) — Three Ukrainians were killed when a helicopter operated by an international military contractor crashed in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday. 1 American died on Friday in Iraq.

The owner and operator of the aircraft said Friday that the three crew members were the only passengers aboard the MI-8 chopper that disappeared Nov. 23.

"Efforts are currently under way to recover the aircraft and the remains of the crew," Air Freight Gulf said in a statement. "Investigations into the cause of the crash are also under way, however early reports indicate the crew encountered poor weather conditions on route."

The wreckage was discovered Friday during a joint search mission between NATO and the company. NATO said Friday that the crash site of the MI-8 chopper was located in eastern Afghanistan.

The helicopter had been chartered by Supreme Global Service Solutions for a cargo mission in support of NATO troops.

Due to the Eid al-Adha and Thanksgiving holidays, attack reports are scant. No Iraqi casualties were reported but a U.S. soldier died of non-combat injuries. Meanwhile, hundreds of Iraqis spent the day mourning Saddam Hussein, who was executed on the first day of the Eid in 2006.

Britain’s former ambassador to the United Nations, Jeremy Greenstock, testified at an inquiry that the United States undermined attempts to win international authorization for the Iraq invasion and failed to use the Sept. 11 attacks to strengthen international relations.
