Cinematic Gender Divide In Hollywood Films

Friday, 03 September 2010 12:39

Taken in 30-minute doses, "Sex and the City" the TV show was OK. Tolerable, even. But as a 142-minute movie, it was a nightmare, a shrill ode to narcissism and materialism and cute little $300 throw pillows. (Some) women loved it. Personally I don't know any of these women and, to be honest, I don't really want to know any of these women. I was only dimly aware of the hundreds of girls-night-out parties where the alcohol undoubtedly flowed freely enough to take the edge off the movie's depressing shallowness.

Sunday Poem: End of Time

Friday, 03 September 2010 12:39

End of time
After a while
it was the end of time
A time immemorial that lies beneath
Lost in its twists and twirls
curves and holes, it has fallen
finally freed from the black hole
i feel alive and living
just like the olden days
though I know,
forlone are the golden days
Memories that won't die
Stories that will not lie
A treasure trove have I kept
of the yonder years that has gone by!

My First Poem - A rendition 37 years later

Friday, 03 September 2010 12:39

This poem is about my little sister who was having problems understanding why the sky would turn dark and the rain would start pouring after the brambroum of thunder and the shattering lighting on the tree branches. She clutched a mango leaf thinking it would save a tree from the thunder...and I wrote the poem on a piece of newspaper cutting. This version is a modern one indeed as the first was written 37 years ago!

The Last Rose

Friday, 03 September 2010 12:39

I started writing poetry at the age of 13, rhyming words at the end of sentences that spoke mostly of love, respect, passion and the play time that embraces the mind of a child from the 1960's.

The rise of Islam is one of the most important events in world history. In the 7th century, Mohammed's intention was to unite the divided Arabs through a new religion. A century after his death, he'd succeeded in producing a medieval superpower. The Arabs and Moors had spread through Spain towards the Pyrenees. Cordoba became renowned as one of the greatest and wealthiest cities in Europe. Moorish cities such as Toledo and Seville were famed for their new culture and universities.

Video of Arrested Iranian Student Leader

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aa4PitJ_GvE

The Iranian student leader Majid was arrested after his speach on students day ..A campaon has started to get him out of prison.
The campaigners accuse the Iranian goverment of an attempt at discrediting the student by publishing pictures of him after the arrest wearing woman clothes (which is very humiliating in Iran) and telling that he tried to escape in woman clothes. The campaigners alleges this is NOT true since eyewitneses saw him get beaten up so bad when they took him right after the speech. "So now people and Iraniens worldwide are putting on the Hijab (Chador)the scarf on the head ..and this way suuport and fight throught the internet to get him free..we fear for his life." wrote the campaign video on Youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDQ1TPXMFyo&feature=player_embedded

In this video, the Pakistan army is seen in action in a territory that it rarely sets foot - South Waziristan. It is unclear though that they are fighting the Pakistan Taliban or villagers who traditionally do not allow Pak army to set foot in their villages. PBS says it is showing footage of Taliban being beaten in the village but we have doubts. It could simply be local people who do not want Pak army there.

Olmert War Criminal: US Protesters

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgN02ZTe5AU&feature=player_embedded

On 15 October 2009, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert came to give the annual King Abdullah II Leadership Lecture at the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy.

Outraged that a man responsible for war crimes in Palestine and Lebanon that killed more than three thousand people during his term of office, community members confronted Olmert inside the lecture hall effectively preventing him from delivering his speech.

The Goldstone report, examining Israel's attack on Gaza last winter, while Olmert was prime minister, called for Israeli leaders to be held accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Recording and photography were officially banned at Olmert's request, but The Electronic Intifada had a camera anyway as protestor after protestor rose to make a statement before police forced them to leave. However, apparently this video was taken a few years ago in Russia. Hence the source is unknown and the location too but it is a very real video, not a graphic picture.
