Could Avatar 'shake' Communism in China?
Written by kazi mahmood Tuesday, 02 February 2010 22:05 Last Updated on Tuesday, 02 February 2010 22:10
Is the Avatar movie impacting China to the extent that the 'Gang Of Four' cultural hunt could pale in comparison? The Communist Party of China (CPC) felt threatened to the extent that it ordered local cinemas in some parts of China to play a documentary on Confucius instead of the Avatar movie.
The cultural battle is on in China as the people opened their eyes over years of 'iron curtains' that barred their real vision of the future. China has banned the 2d version of Avatar in cinemas after it smashed all time records and garnered no less than USD100 million in Chinese cinemas.
At this moment, China is showing an unprecedented anger at the U.S. for its sale of weapons to Taiwan, a state regarded as part of the 'future' Greater China and which cannot be militarily stronger than China itself. The U.S. move has caused the ire of Beijing and of the CPC which is capable to show its military might against Taiwan anytime in an engagement but is feeling a bigger pain with Avatar sqeezing its dominance on the 'cultural' scenery. Under Mao Tze Dung, the Chinese had to live with the nightmare of the 'Gang of Four' which unleashed a cultural revolution in China, a revolution that almost caused the CPC to fall from its throne due to the unpopularity of the 'scheme' by the four powerful personalities under Mao.
Avatar has created such an impact in some villages of China that the authorities felt threatened to compell cinemas to shut down the projection of the American made movie. The story line of the Avatar is similar to the daily situation faced by poorer and lower class citizens in many parts of China. These citizens are finding themselves marginalized with greedy Communist party leaders siphoning their land and their homes, leaving them even poorer while the Communist party cadres become richer.
In Avatar, the 'Aliens' had to battle humans who wanted to grab the only source of energy left on the planet and this made the circles of discussions across China and on the Internet. The Chinese who felt cheated by the CPC members actually loved Avatar for its story line but in at least one state, the authorities were forced to deny that they had named their unique mountains after the Avatar 'Hallehuja' mountains.
The CPC's actions against the Avatar reminds the people of the days of the 'Gang of Four', the extremist group that wanted to suppress all forms of 'entertainment' and 'joy' among the people and was on a witch hunt against anyone who 'thought' differently from the leftist political grouping. China suffered considerably under the inflence of the 'Gang of Four' and the comparison is as simple for the Chinese people today to the extent that the Avatar movie is now seen by the CPC as an attempt by the Americans to stir 'trouble' in China. Though officially the CPC did not say why it is really banning Avatar from cinemas, the writing is on the wall: China is feeling threatened by its own 'cultural' ouvertures towards the West by allowing larger number of Hollywood movies to 'corrupt' the minds and disturb the cultural allegiances in China.
For history's sake the name 'Gang of Four' was the name given to a leftist political faction composed of four Chinese Communist Party officials. They came to prominence during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) and were subsequently charged with a series of treasonous crimes. The members consisted of Jiang Qing, Mao Zedong's last wife and the leading figure of the group, and her close associates Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan, and Wang Hongwen.
The Gang of Four effectively controlled the power organs of the Communist Party of China through the latter stages of the Cultural Revolution, although it remains unclear which major decisions were made through Mao Zedong and carried out by the Gang, and which were the result of the Gang of Four's own planning. The Gang of Four, together with disgraced Communist general Lin Biao, were labeled the two major "counter-revolutionary forces" of the Cultural Revolution and officially blamed for the worst excesses of the societal chaos that ensued during the ten years of turmoil. Their downfall in a coup d'état on October 6, 1976, a mere month after Mao's death, brought about major celebrations on the streets of Beijing and marked the end of a turbulent political era in China.
The name was given to the group by Mao Zedong in what seemed like a warning to Jiang Qing during which Mao stated, "Do not try to begin a gang of four to accumulate power".
It is now officially claimed by the Chinese Communist Party that Mao in his last year turned against Jiang Qing and her associates, and that after his death on 9 September 1976, they attempted to seize power (the same allegation made against Lin Biao in 1971). Even decades later, it is impossible to know the full truth of these events.
It does appear that their influence was in decline before Mao's death and when Zhou Enlai died in January 1976, thanks to his reforms; it is clear the gang altogether lost its impact.

If the Taliban had many surface-to-air missiles, it could dramatically alter an already struggling allied war effort. Shoulder-launched missiles downed scores of Soviet helicopters in the 1980s.
